He grew up in St. Charles, Minnesota, and after high school, spent four years at Minnesota State University-Mankato where he earned a degree in English and Technical Writing. The book is the first in a planned series of other hunting- and fishing-related adventure books for young adults.

Before writing his first book, Cory spent three years working as a Communications Consultant for Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Prior to that, he spent several years on the editorial staff of North American Hunter magazine.
